Fort Ward

Saturday, October 7
My sister M joined the kids and I on a trip to Fort Ward which is not too far from my parents' house. Fort Ward was an earthen fort built by the Union troops during the Civil War to protect Washington, D.C. This fort was built after Virginia seceded from the Union, leaving the capital vulnerable to attack from the Confederate Army. There is a museum at the site that we went to and then we were able to walk around the fort and pose in front of some cannons that have been put on display to show how the fort was used.

Afterwards we played at a playground on the park grounds that had a cannon the kids could climb on. We had a lot of fun even though it was a fairly chilly and windy day.

This is a beautiful tree that was at the park...
