The night before Easter the kids all pick which Easter basket they are going to use for that year. There is one basket that is quite a bit smaller than the other ones that usually the youngest in the family has used - but we have enough that no one has to use that one. MJ (who was 4 at the time) explained to me why she wasn't picking the little basket this year, "When I was 3 I had to have the little basket, but then I grew up and now I get to choose my basket!"

When I was getting the girls dressed in their Easter dresses I wanted the younger two to wear slips with their dresses, but the ones that they have weren't going to work so I borrowed some half slips from the older girls. I had one on MJ and was trying to put a safety pin in it to cinch up the waist so that it wouldn't fall off of her. She was scared while I was doing it so I said, "I don't think that safety pin is very sharp." To which she responded, "But it's sharp to me!"

One day we were saying a morning family prayer and instead of MJ naming everyone who was going to be leaving and asking them to come home safely she said, "Bless those 6 that they can come home safe." I'm not sure how/when she figured out that there were going to be 6 people leaving!!

On the way to the Family History picnic, we were driving in some heavy rush hour traffic to get to the location. To get onto the freeway, we had to go through some metered lights which were flashing between green and red - allowing 2 cars through at a time. MJ sits in the middle of the row behind the driver's seat and apparently she was watching the lights because all of a sudden we hear her pipe up from the back, "What is going on with those lights!" It took us a few seconds to figure out what she was talking about and then we started laughing - how many 4-year-olds would even pay attention to that and notice that they were working differently than regular traffic lights? She couldn't figure out why the lights were going straight from green to red without turning yellow first!

My parents have a lot of bird feeders at their house that they keep in their backyard. One morning in the spring the birds were being really noisy outside and I said to MJ, "Do you hear the birds?"  She paused for a moment to listen to them and then she said, "Yes, should I tell them the food is at Grandma's house?"  (It was the funniest thing!)

One night MJ was having a hard time actually going to bed and going to sleep. This is the conversation that we had:
MJ: I can't go to sleep.

Me: Why not?

MJ: Because my arm is too exhausted to pull my blankets up.


One evening we had french toast for dinner and while tucking her into bed MJ said, "I wish I could have french toast everyday... because I love french toast."

These happened back in January, I just forgot to post them:

We were reading the scriptures as a family and someone had a question about something so we said to look it up and Kitty asked, "Should we look in the Tropical Guide or the Bible Dictionary?"

I asked MJ to unlock the front door for her sisters because they were going to be home from school shortly.  MJ responded with, "Thank you for asking me that. Because I love doing that."

MJ:  "Mom, can we have barpickles?"  It took me a few minutes to figure out that what she was asking for was a popsicle!

One day when DH was leaving for work, MJ said, "I'm going to miss my daddy!" and she had a big smile on her face.

Luke likes to cook off and on at our house and one day he made brownies for dessert.  MJ said, "Luke can I tell you something? Those brownies were delicious!"

One night after we had our offer accepted on our new home, we were having Family Home Evening and DH started it off by asking if anyone had any concerns.  Kay quickly responded with:  "Yes. Bees and wasps. They bug me."

Our new home has a big great room area on the main level that is attached to the kitchen.  Right now we only have an old love seat and a glider rocking chair in the room so it looks very big and open.  One day Kay said, "What should we call this room? The exercise room? The relaxing room?"

I was making a boutonniere for M&M's date for a school dance and Kay asked why M&M was going to give him a boutonniere: "Is it because she loves him?"

Kay:  Dad, what does the tooth fairy need with all those teeth?

MJ talk

Today MJ and I were out doing some shopping and there was a car that we parked next to in the parking lot that had snow on it.  I pointed out the snow to MJ and she asked where they got it.  I replied that I didn't know.  Well, when we were driving home I told MJ to look at the snow that had fallen on the Oquirrh Mountains.  She then said, "Hey, maybe the car got the snow in the mountains!  They were driving and then flipped over and the snow got on it and then it flipped back and drove away."

Here are a few conversations that took place last year in 2013 when I started looking for a new house for us.  DH didn't want the news going out yet that we were looking for homes and would possibly be moving, so I didn't post these at that time.

We are having some stucco fixed on our house where some water has been leaking behind the stucco. We have also been looking into possibly moving to a bigger house. So when Kay saw the worker tearing off the stucco from the side of the house she asked, "Is he making a bigger house?"

I took MJ and Kay with me to look at a couple of houses one day and one of them was a big house but it only had four bedrooms. When we were leaving the house Kay said to me that she really liked it. I mentioned that it wouldn't really work for us with only four bedrooms and after thinking about it for a minute or two she said, "I know Mom! Why don't we just go to the store and buy another bedroom?" (If only it were that simple!) Then in another house, there was no furniture in the place and when she saw the master bedroom and how big it was she said, "Mom! We could all sleep in here together!"  Then when she saw the size of the master closet she said, "Oooo, this could be my room!"

Today at church, they sang to MJ in Primary for her birthday this week.  They gave her a little bag with a bookmark and a KitKat candy bar.  After Primary, MJ came and showed me what they gave her and she said, "And I get to be a year older too!"

After church one of the Primary leaders came and told me that MJ didn't want to go up to the front to be sung to (or she wasn't sure what they wanted her to do), so Kay ran over to her and took her up to stand with her in the front of the Primary room.  They were going to sing "You've Had a Birthday" and they sometimes change the words to it and let the kids choose some adjectives to fill in the line, "one year older and wiser too".  MJ apparently wasn't picking any words so Kay stood in front of her and looked her in the face for a few seconds and then said, "I think she will be more wonderful and cuter this year."

We were talking about professions and what the kids might like to be when they grow up. I mentioned that one of my sisters always said she wanted to be a veterinarian when she was growing up. Blondie then said, "I thought veterinarians were people that don't eat meat..."

A few weeks ago while the girls were off-track from school, I took them downtown to the Tracy Aviary.  It was a beautiful day and afterwards we went over to the neighboring park and ate a picnic lunch that we had brought with us.  While we were sitting there eating, MJ said, "I just love this time of year!"

We were watching a T.V. show (Dr. Who I think) and they had a record player on the show.  Luke said, "Look, it's an ancient record player!"  MJ then said, "Ooh, is he going to watch it?"

One night when the kids were supposed to be in bed going to sleep, Blondie apparently had a light on in the room and was trying to do some homework.  MJ, who shared a room with her at the time, said, "Stop doing your homework.  I need my beauty sleep."

I just came upstairs to hear MJ say to Kay (complete with hand gestures), "Crackers are my life!"

Since the kids were out of school and DH home from work for Martin Luther King Day, I decided to setup an appointment to update our family pictures.  I think we got some really cute ones and can't wait to hang them up on the wall.  The funniest moment during the photo shoot was when we had just finished taking a set of pictures with our first family pose and MJ let out a huge sigh and said, "Man, this is taking forever!!"

Kitty: "What kind of animal does chicken come from?"

Blondie: "Is Doorbuster a store?" (referring to all of the Doorbuster sales listed in the ads for Black Friday)

Kay, MJ and I were eating lunch one day and Kay kept telling me to get things for her and I was getting a little frustrated with how she was ordering me to get her this or that and so I finally told her that I had just sat down myself to eat and that she was old enough to get some things for herself.  After she got herself some chips she sat there for a minute and then said, "When I get big I'm going to do just what my kids ask me to do!"  I just had to chuckle at that and thought to myself, "Yeah, we'll see about that."

I helped out in Valentine's Day parties for Kay, Kitty and MJ on Valentine's Day this year.  On our way home from school with MJ and Kay in the car, Kay was chewing some gum that she had gotten from someone.  She asked me if she should swallow it and I said it was usually better to put it in a tissue or something and then throw it away.  Then she said, "When I chew gum it looks like a brain."

It's been a little crazy with YW the last few months and we have been leaving the church for different activities which has caused me to have to take the car seats out of the car to fit the YW in there.  Sometimes instead of putting them back right afterwards I will leave them out until I need them again.  Once I was in a hurry to go somewhere so I just let MJ sit in one of the booster seats and buckled her in next to the window in the back row of our minivan.  I didn't realize how much she enjoyed sitting there until I went to buckle her car seat back in its usual place in the middle of the front row of the van and she said, "But I will be sad if I don't have a window!"

MJ was supposed to be in bed one night and she came down and stood at the top of the stairs to the family room.  DH asked her what was the matter and she said that her light was still on in her room and it was supposed to be off. I told her to turn the light off and she said, "I can't because I'm little."

MJ comes into my room one morning saying she needs help getting dressed.  She comes in with her shirt over her pajamas.  I laugh at her for a minute and then help her take the shirt off and she laughs and says, "That was awesome."  Then I tried to take her nightgown off and she says, "No I want to do it myself so you don't see my underwear!"  "But you don't wear underwear," I said.  MJ: "Oh, I mean so you don't see my diaper!"

One day MJ and Kay were not behaving and I was getting more than a little frustrated with them.  At one point MJ came back downstairs to where I was and she said, "I'm sorry Mom, I'm sorry."  She paused for a few seconds like she was thing about what to say she was sorry about and then she said, "I'm sorry for all the things that I did." (with a very sad look on her face)

Kay's kindergarten class is learning about shapes and they had to find some objects at home in those shapes to bring to school today for show and tell.  She found a ball and I was helping her say the word 'sphere' to describe the shape of the ball.  When she finally was able to say the word correctly she said, "Sphere -that 's a weird name for a ball."
