Where is all the snow?

(*Sorry, I will be posting things out of order until I get caught up on my blogging!)

After a month or two of almost spring-like weather and no snow we woke up this morning to a little bit of snowfall.  (It wasn't even worth taking a picture of.)  Unfortunately Kay is sick or she probably would have gone outside to enjoy it...

It has been an unseasonably warm winter with very little snowfall.  It has actually been a little depressing for our family...

Weather

We have been having our usual crazy Utah spring weather this year.  We have had already had a few days in the 80s where we had to turn on the air conditioner and now it's cooled off again.  We may need to turn the furnace back on this weekend.  So far we have had perfect weather for the kids' soccer games.  I'm not looking forward to the games in the upper 80s and 90s that we usually have by the end of the season.

We had an unusually mild winter with very little snow fall.  I think we maybe had 3 snowstorms over the winter where the snow stayed on the ground for at least one day.  It was pretty disappointing and we will pay for it this summer with the lack of water in the reservoirs here in Utah.

I was able to get out to work in the garden a little on Tuesday.  Hopefully I can get it ready here soon so we can start planting some things for this year.

The heat is on!

We have had nothing but hot, hot (and even some high humidity) days since we returned from our trip to Washington! I already can't wait for fall to get here!

Rain, rain & more rain!

That has been our weather for the last week and we're supposed to get even more! Last week we finally had some nice sunny weather so we could go out and work in the garden. Then on Saturday we had some storms go through, Sunday and Monday were nice and then it has rained everyday since! The kids and I were able to work in some compost and fertilizer into the garden soil on Monday and we planted some strawberry and tomato plants. I love the rain, but right now it is really putting a crimp in my gardening! It would be nice to be able to have another sunny day so I can plant some seeds in our nice soil now and not let the weeds enjoy it all!

And it's been a little too chilly! I had to turn the furnace back on - it's the middle of May! The temperature got down in the 30s on Tuesday and we even had a few snowflakes fall!

April snow

We had a couple of days last week that were in the 60s and one day in the low 70s! Then this is the scene we woke up to Sunday morning - about 6-7 inches of wet, heavy snow:

What happened to fall already?

This morning I woke up to snow on the ground and temperatures in the 30s!! Time to crank up the heat! I hope the kids stay warm at the bus stop!

Beautiful Sunday

The weather this past Sunday was absolutely beautiful! In the evening the kids and I went for a walk around the neighborhood. Afterwards we were sitting on the lawn and found a potato bug (roly poly) that we showed to Kay. She asked what it was and I told her it was a potato bug. After thinking about it for a minute she called it a "Potato head ladybug." It was cute because she was trying to associate the name with things that she knows and she knows what a potato head is and she knows what a ladybug is so she just put the two names together.

No planting today...

It has been raining on and off all day today so not a good day for planting in the garden. Hopefully tomorrow will be better... (Although I am not complaining about the rain - I love the rain - it is just hampering my efforts in the garden right now.)

Tuesday afternoon:


This morning:
We have a couple of inches of snow in the yard - a very wet, heavy snow.Our blossom tree out front - it actually looks like it's blooming with all of the snow on it! Hopefully it will get a chance to actually bloom in the next couple of days...

And the verdict is still out on whether my strawberry plants will survive or not...

Garden work

Yesterday we did some yard work during our family home evening time - the kids and I worked in the garden and DH mowed the lawn. I think it's good to get the kids out there and have them share in some of the work. I think that this is the earliest that we have ever been ready to actually start planting in the garden. Yesterday we got some more strawberry plants planted before we headed inside. We have been having very strong winds all day today though, so I hope the plants survive!!

The weather is supposed to be cold the next few days so hopefully it will warm back up next week and then we can start planting in the main section of our garden!

Spring is here!

We have had some absolutely beautiful weather lately and I finally took some time to get some yard work done. This week I was able to trim some of the bushes out front, including my rose bush that grows HUGE each year. I think it looks very nice now, especially with the crocuses that are blooming and the other bulbs that are coming up.Yesterday I was also able to start getting the garden ready for planting. I was able to turn over about a third of the soil and get some of the nasty weed roots from last year pulled. Hopefully I can get a jump start on the weeds this year and not have the never ending battle that we struggle with each year.

This is one of my favorite spring bulbs. It's called Chionodoxa. I think I planted these the first year we were in this house and I haven't had to do anything with them since then. I have white, pink and purplish blue varieties.
The kids have been having fun getting out and playing in the yard and on their bikes and scooters. Baby K had a lot of fun out in the garden with me. She had fun playing in the dirt and liked holding the ladybugs that I found. Baby K also has a fascination with watching honeybees. We have had a lot already in the front yard flying from flower to flower and Baby K loves watching them and occasionally tries to touch one... Hopefully she won't keep that up! And hopefully she won't have to discover why that is not a good idea!

January Weather

January was somewhat depressing when it came to weather this year. The kids were off-track from school for all but the last week of the month and I think we had fresh snowfall only once during that time - and only an inch or two. We have been bitterly cold and overcast so the snow that we got the week of Christmas still hasn't melted all the way from our yard. So while the midwest and east coast have been getting some major snowstorms this season, we have had next to nothing! We are really going to be hurting water-wise this summer if we don't get some significant snowfall in the next month or two...

First dose of winter!

Today we are getting our first dose of winter! We woke up to a dusting of snow on the ground and it has continued to snow off and on this morning/early afternoon. On my way home from the grocery store it started sticking to the roads and sidewalks and I was watching the outside temperature drop until it was only 30 degrees by the time I got home. Thank goodness soccer ended last week!!

Beautiful Weather!!!

We have been having absolutely BEAUTIFUL fall weather this year! Usually this far into the soccer season we are having to bundle the kids up really good and take blankets and umbrellas for the games. Well, last Saturday we had weather close to 70 degrees and a slight breeze - absolutely perfect soccer weather! And the last games of the season are this Saturday.

The kids have really been taking advantage of the nice weather while they have been off-track. The neighbor kids behind us are off-track as well and the kids have been playing outside almost everyday. I have been loving it!!

(or playing at least)...The kids had some fun playing outside yesterday during a rare rainy day here in Utah.

Cooler weather

We had some unseasonably cooler weather last week that we all enjoyed. The highs were in the 70s and it got into the 50s at night. It was nice to be able to turn off the air conditioner for a few days and enjoy being outside. I was also able to get a lot of good work done in the garden. Unfortunately we are back to the 90s this week. Thankfully we have had a relatively mild summer this year - we have yet to see the temperature at 100 or above. And fall is right around the corner!!

Rainy spring

We have had about three weeks straight where we have had rain almost every day. That is an amazing streak for Utah! My husband and I have been loving it and the grass is greener than it's been since we've lived here (and our water bill is going to love it)!! It's been great not having to water the garden and the grass! Unfortunately this week is scheduled to be HOT and DRY!! :( I want the rain back!
